    Phillies Weather Update
Hoping the game goes on tonight. Go Phillies!

That said, I've mentioned that the weather scenario is a low confidence forecast. The GFS has done a good job at predicting the showers early and the rain at this time. The latest GFS (2 PM run) continues with rain, even a bit heavier after midnight, as low pressure develops in West Virginia along the stalling front.

It's possible that we might get a break in the rain action after 8 PM with the frontal passage, but this front is referred to meteorologically as an "anafront" where rain re-develops behind the frontal passage due to cyclogenesis. Again, specifics of this frontal passage are gonna be tough, but the current radar trends suggest that the game may start with the rain ending, but the rain might restart, even heavier later this evening causing the game to be suspended. If that occurs it will be a bummer.

Philadelphia Week Weather Update- Sat AM
As mentioned earlier this week, confidence in the forecast for the weekend is lower than usual, since it involves a slowing cold front and wave development along the front. The models aren't always very good at capturing the position of the stalled front or the position of the expected low development.

That said, the GFS has been consistent in its most recent runs. (The NAM model from last night, as it often does, becomes an outlier with the precipitation trends. I should stop posting it :-) )

The GFS has a bit more rain showers for Saturday evening and less development of a low pressure system for Sunday. As a result, Saturday may be a bit wetter than previously expected and Sunday will be sunny.

Right now, a warm front type situation is bringing some drizzle and fog. (I missed this in the forecast yesterday.) This should lift north of us giving us some briefly bright skies early afternoon, before the clouds associated with the cold front move in.

Sat 10/31: Cloudy, very breezy and mild. Some drizzle in the morning, but some bright spots early afternoon, then cloudy again with showers developing during the later afternoon lasting into the evening. The current GFS has light rain for the Phillies game tonight. High 73.

Sun 11/1: Early clouds break for mostly sunny skies. High 62

That said, the models are a little weak on the details in the short run. Which means confidence for the weekend forecast is a bit below normal.

Currently the models are showing a cold front moving through on Saturday, bringing light showers (the models have the energy shearing off to our west and north.) Philadelphia Weekend Weather Update- Sat AM
Some differences in last night's models, as the NAM delays the bulk of the heavy rain until this evening here in Philadelphia; the GFS continues its forecast of heavy rain by late morning and early afternoon through early evening.

As suggested in my earlier forecast (based on the NAM), the morning hours may have a break in the action with even some bright spots, but showers should return to the area by afternoon as an upper air area of spin/vorticity (vort max) moves over us from the southwest.

Increasingly heavy showers, thundershowers and rain will develop ahead of the cold front today, especially by afternoon and continue into early evening. Rainfall amounts may approach 2 inches. (The GFS continues not to show any true dry periods for Sat morning, although precip will likely be very light and intermittent this morning, according to the NAM model. It's not clear whether the NAM is correct with the bulk of the rain waiting until the evening. I guess we'll see.)

Sunday will be partly cloudy and windy and cooler.

Sat 10/24: Cloudy with showers and thunderstorms, increasingly likely and heavy by afternoon, (although the NAM model delays the heaviest rain until the evening). Breezy, mild. High 70

High pressure will bring beautiful weather and moderating temps for most of the week. Unfortunately, a strong cold front with heavy rains may pass through next Saturday with clearing for Sunday.

Timing of this frontal passage may change as we approach the weekend, although the GFS has been consistent about this for many days.

Philadelphia Weekend Weather Forecast- Sun AM
The fantom nor'easter that the news/weather has been talking about has just begin to organize, as the area of low level moisture convergence moves north of us into New England today. Our steady rains of the past few days will taper significantly today and by afternoon, there will be only a chance of scattered intermittent showers. Indeed, I expect brights spots and possibly some sun to break through briefly today between those showers. The upper trough will keep things unsettled and cool

Sun 10/18: Cloudy and damp with light, scattered intermittent showers tapering through the day. There may be some bright spots and even a brief bit of sun possible to break through the showers. Breezy, cold. High 46

    Forecast Update
The slight break in the action this afternoon was picked up by the NAM model. If the NAM is correct, very heavy rain is expected again this evening and night time into Sunday morning, then tapers. Some bright patches possible Sunday afternoon, just like today.

Philadelphia Weekend Weather Forecast- Sat AM
Last night's GFS accurately captured the heavy rain that has covered our area today. (The NAM had moved it to tonight, but that seems to be wrong.) Going with the GFS, heavy rain for today tapers tonight into Sunday. Most of the rain should be over by Sunday afternoon, although a light sprinkle is possible.

I want to clarify the erroneous reference to a Nor'easter that the newsmedia is talking about. Today's weather strictly speaking, is NOT due to an intense surface low that is moving up the coast. There is no deep low off the coastline, the usual reference to a Nor'easter.

There is a weak low, far off the coast. Instead, today's weather is actually due to an area of low level moisture convergence situated over us interacting with a deep upper trough that is stuck just to our west. What this means is that the surface winds are bringing in moisture due east due to surface flow while the deep upper trough bringing in southwesterly moist air aloft- this is causing the moist air to rise and condense into rain. This area of easterly flow rising up over an area dominated by an upper trough is referred to as an "inverted coastal front". This area will eventually cause a surface low to form tonight into Sunday and perhaps Cape Cod will have a Nor'easter tomorrow. Our weather isn't due to one.

I don't know why the news/weather insists on misinformation.

Sat 10/17: Cloudy with rain, moderately heavy at times. Breezy and cold. High 44.

No change in the forecast- The models have been consistent with the forecast for the weekend. The basic scenario involves the development of a sharp upper air trough in the Great Lakes area, causing the passage of a cold front on Friday. Surface low pressure develops along the upper trough, giving rain for Saturday. The upper trough lifts out late Sunday. According to the GFS model, the rain ends early Sunday afternoon, remaining mostly cloudy, perhaps some bright spots in the afternoon. (The NAM has rain lingering into the evening. I'm going with the GFS.)

The specifics of the forecast for the weekend remain uncertain. The basic scenario involves the development of a sharp upper air trough in the Great Lakes area, associated the passage of a cold front on Friday. Last night's models differ from previous runs in not having the upper trough close off. As a result, things may clear mid day on Sunday instead of lingering into Monday. So positive trends already in the works.

It's still not clear whether the rain will be well-organized, continuous or intermittent on Saturday. The surface reflection of this upper trough is indistinct. It is possible that the models are over-doing the rain intensity and coverage on Saturday, so it may not turn out to be the washout previously forecast.

Sat 10/17: Tentative: Cloudy with intermittent, scattered showers and light drizzle. Breezy and cool. High 50.

    Philadelphia Winter Climate Outlook
I heard on KYW today that Accuweather is predicting a colder than normal winter and a snowier winter.

Good for them! I've been predicting a record cold winter for several months now! It seems that the El Nino will provide an active, moist subtropical flow and more moisture, based on current observations.

But the big item, apparently controversial, is the explanation for the expected cold weather. I see the reason for the expected cold weather is the extended minimum in the sunspot cycle and it's associated decrease in total solar irradiance for the past two years. Unfortunately, some of the nuts that totally refute the anthrogenic greenhouse effect seize on this solar influence as the only reason we've had global warming during the past few decades. (the sun has had unusually active sunspot cycles over the past 30 years.) So even the most reasonable observers of climate trend are reluctant to suggest the solar cycle can influence our climate so significantly.

I believe the greenhouse effect is real and man's increase in greenhouse gases is an active factor in our climate change. However, I also believe that low activity solar cycle in the short run may likely counteract greenhouse global warming, certainly for this winter.

As I've been saying on this blog since early August, expect a colder than normal fall and winter. Indeed, with solar minimum showing reluctance to fade, we may have record cold temperatures this winter.. Add to this the recent observed increase in the subtropical jet moisture, and a doozy of a winter is likely. Get that snowblower ready!

The specifics of the forecast for the weekend remains uncertain. The basic scenario involves the development of a sharp upper air trough in the Great Lakes area, associated the passage of a cold front on Friday. This anomalously sharp trough will undergo a negative tilt, causing the development of a surface low near the coast and a moist, cold easterly flow off the ocean.

Rain is likely on Saturday into early Sunday, but it's not clear whether the rain will be well-organized or continuous. Right now, Saturday likely will have the most intermittent light rain, with heavier rain expected for Sunday as the sharp upper trough closes off into a closed low.

The predicted jet configuration is quite anomalous for October, so confidence is low with current forecast. That said, the models are predicted an extended period of rainy cool weather from Thurs through Monday.

Sat 10/17: Tentative: Cloudy with intermittent showers and light drizzle. Breezy and cool. High 53.

Much uncertainty with the upcoming weekend forecast, as the models have changed considerably since yesterday. The basic scenario involves the development of a deep upper air trough in the Great Lakes area, associated the passage of a cold front on Friday.

Things were to clear out for Saturday and Sunday. However, the latest GFS model stalls the frontal system, allowing the development of a coastal low Saturday night into Sunday. The would result in a cold, windy rain for later Saturday into Sunday. Too early to be sure on this one. Will keep an eye on this.

    Solar - Climate Forecast
The solar activity that was seen two weeks ago and anticipated from observations from the STEREO satellites and the GONG research group. has rotated out of earth view and some additional activity has just begun to develop.

Solar flux remains low, and the recent increase associated with the spotted regions has again declined.

Solar Cycle 24 has truly begun but activity remains at historic recorded lows. Solar activity has remained low for such a long time that the effects of low solar irradiance will still affect our climate in the short term.

We will remain in an climatically cool weather pattern for the fall and early winter, although things may begin to change as the sun becomes more active. While we will certainly see some typical warmer weather stretches, continue to expect a colder than normal fall on average.

This colder pattern will likely extend well into the early winter period, with things possibly changing late winter. It appears possible that we may also have a record cold early winter this year.

Philadelphia Weekend Weather UPDATE -Sat PM
The front eventually moved through. I wasn't too impressed with the model forecast for today; the models really had precip ending very early and clearing much earlier than what happened. (The NAM MOS was pretty good suggesting higher POPs until afternoon.) Tomorrow looks better, as high pressure builds in. There's a strong jet flow from the southwest which will bring in high cirrus clouds at times.

Just want to mention that the long range weather pattern looks fairly cold, with deep upper air troughs developing the end of this week and next week. Check my solar-climate prediction below. Things remain quiet, solar-wise.

Sun 10/11: Mostly sunny, some high clouds. High 69.

Some showers developing over us, behind the front (anticipated by the NAM MOS, but not the GFS) will delay clearing until at least 2 PM. Much more shower activity than had been expected last night by either of the models, although the NAM MOS did suggest high POPs through 2 PM.

A cold front is moving through PA this evening. Most of the rain and dynamics will pass to our north and west, but some showers expected before daybreak. Skies should break for some sun about 9-10 AM on Saturday, as the front moves to the south. Some high and middle cloudiness will linger, as the front hangs up to our south.

Sat 10/10: Clouds break for some sun through some middle and high cluds about 10 AM. Broken clouds and sunny skies remain for much of the day. High 69

Sun 10/11: A continued mix of high thin cloudiness and sun. High 70.

Philadelphia Weekend Weather Outlook -Wed PM
A front will pass through on Friday and will stall to our south. Currently, the position of the front will be far enough south to keep precipitation south of us both Saturday and Sunday. A dry, partly cloudy weekend is the current outlook. The latest models runs continue to suppress the rain just to our south, but it will be close by. High, thin cloudiness may be with us for periods over the weekend with occasional thicker cloudiness. (A slight northward change in the expected position of this front would cause a big change in the current dry forecast.)

Sat 10/10: A mix of clouds and some sun through high thin cloudiness. High 72

Sun 10/11: A continued mix of high thin cloudiness and occasional cloud/ sun. High 71.
