Philadelphia Weekend Weather Outlook -Wed PM
A similar pattern to last weekend, as colder air on Saturday quickly retreats as milder air moves in on Sunday ahead of a stalled cold front in the middle of the country. The weekend will be dry as a large high pressure system remains over us.

From the Rockies to the Mississippi, very cold weather develop, but the jet configuration will keep the East coast mild and dry.

Sat 12/3: Sunny and a bit chilly. High 49.

Sun 12/4: A mix of sun and clouds. The amount of cloudiness is not certain at this time. Milder. High 56.

    Philadelphia Winter Climate Forecast- December
While climate forecasting is not my forte (for that matter, I don't think it's anyone's forte) I do like to share with my readers what I'm thinking about regarding the upcoming 2011-2012 winter season.

My regular readers know that two years ago, I put great stock in the solar cycle (and a lesser extent the sea surface temperature cycles) to predict a very cold winter.

We have now reached a point in the current solar cycle where the expected observed increase in total solar irradiance has become evident. We are two years away from the solar maximum. While this solar maximum will be significantly lower than our last two cycles, and we are coming off of a significantly lengthy solar minimum, it's my opinion that this coming winter will approach the very mild winters we had in 1999 and 2000.

During those winters, we had unseasonably warm periods throughout the winter. Certainly we had stretches of cold weather and snow, but the 60-70 degree temps we had this weekend were very similar at that stage of the solar cycle. Add to this the greenhouse gases and I think we will have large stretches of very mild weather this winter and on average it will be very warmer than normal.

In recent past winters, we haven't really seen winter-like weather until after December 15th and I expect that to occur this year as well. But overall, I think we'll see repeated long stretches of mild weather occurring in December, January, and February this season.

I guess we'll find out if the solar cycle does affect our winter this year.

Philly Thanksgiving Weekend Outlook -Wed PM
The picture perfect weekend starts this Thursday, Thanksgiving day, with high pressure building in. High pressure will remain in control the entire weekend, as low pressure developing in the middle of the country cuts off.

All four days will have plenty of sunshine and mild temps near or above 60. Sunday may have some variable cloudiness at times during the day. Still quite nice!

Thur 11/24: Sunny and cool. High 55

Fri 11/25: Sunny and mild. High 61

Sat 11/26: Sunny and mild. High 63

Sun 11/27: Partly sunny and mild. High 61

Philly Thanksgiving Weekend Outlook -Sun PM
The upcoming Thanksgiving Thursday - Sunday period originally looked like a perfect four day stretch, but the latest GFS model develops an upper trough and low pressure system on Sunday.

That said, the first three days look spectacular, as large high pressure and a retreated jet stream will result in beautiful sunny conditions and mild temperatures. It won't feel like November! I'll update as the weekend approaches.

Philly Weekend Weather Forecast -Fri PM
Similar to last weekend, the cold air will rapidly retreat on Saturday as high pressure moves over us. On Sunday, warm air aloft and an approaching weak frontal system will bring considerable cloudiness on Sunday and Sunday afternoon.

Sat 11/19: Chilly temperatures moderate to a milder 52 in the afternoon.

Sun 11/20: Mostly cloudy in the morning, cloudy in the afternoon. Mild. High 60.

Philly Weekend Weather Forecast -Fri PM
Another easy forecast as the upper cyclonic flow that moved in Friday quickly relaxes and allows moderating temperatures to be with us Saturday afternoon and Sunday. A return of moisture on Sunday afternoon will result in increasing cloudiness.

Sat 11/12: Chilly temperatures moderate to a mild 57 in the afternoon.

Sun 11/13: Sunny in the morning increasing cloudiness in the afternoon. High 60.

Philly Weekend Weather Forecast -Fri PM
An easy forecast as high pressure will control our weather for the entire weekend suppressing a low-pressure system to our south.

Sat 11/5: Sunny and cool. High 54

Sun 11/6: Sunny and milder. High 58.
