Hurricane Irene Update - Sat 7AM
This weekend's weather will about Hurricane---> Tropical Storm Irene

The models are consistent with the track of the hurricane up along the coast of NJ. While the hurricane is expected to decrease in intensity as it moves north and become a strong tropical storm, it is also expected to interact with a frontal system and jet stream to create possibly historic high rainfall. So while no roofs are expected to be ripped off by winds, record setting flooding and fallen trees will create emergency situations in many areas. Please refer to discussions from the National Weather Service for details.

With the current predicted track, wind damage and possibly record-setting flooding is likely, even in Philadelphia and western suburbs. Rain starts much earlier than previously thought- likely before noon today. The best place for updates is the National Hurricane Center.

Sat 8/27: Cloudy, with rain, starting around noon in Philadelphia. Heaviest rain and winds tonight into tomorrow morning. High 77.

Sun 8/28: Heavy tropical flooding rains, damaging strong winds and gusts early, then windy with partial clearing, maybe some sun, during the mid afternoon. High 78.

    National Hurricane Center.

Philly Weekend Weather- Hurricane Irene Update - Thurs AM
This weekend's weather wIll continue to be influenced by hurricane Irene.

Last night's models moved the track of the storm closer to the NJ coast. The models are in greater agreement with the track of the storm. That said, the models have all been somewhat off in predicting the position and intensity of the storm over the past few days, so uncertainty still exists. Nonetheless, the storm is large and its areal effects will overshadow small differences the track of the center.

With the current predicted track, significant flooding and wind damage is possible, even in Philadelphia, starting Saturday night. The best place for updates is the
    National Hurricane Center.

    Stay tuned.

Sat 8/27: Cloudy, very warm and very humid. Windy. Chance of light sprinkles in the afternoon. High 84. Heavy rain begins at night

Sun 8/28: Heavy tropical flooding rains, damaging strong winds and gusts. High 79. This forecast is tentative and likely to change.

Hurricane Irene Update -Wed PM (2)
This weekend's weather wIll continue to be influenced by hurricane Irene.

The latest EMCWF (European) model gives a track closer to NJ while the GFS and more so, the Navy NOGAPS has Irene further away.

To give an idea what's being predicted by the models, the GFS has rain starting Saturday evening in Philadelphia with sustained winds of 30mph and higher gusts by Sunday morning with over 5 inches of rain falling. This is for Philadelphia. Needless to say, conditions at the shore will be much worse, based on the current GFS model track and intensity.

Again, the NOGAPS track is more eastward, with lesser storm effects; it usually is the better model.

Will continue to watch this. Stay tuned.

Sat 8/27: Becoming mostly cloudy, very warm and very humid. Chance of light sprinkles in the afternoon. High 84. Rain begins at night

Sun 8/28: Heavy tropical flooding rains, very windy with gradual clearing late in the day. High 80. This forecast is tentative and likely to change.

    Hurricane Irene Update -Wed PM
This weekend's weather wIll continue to be influenced by hurricane Irene. The NOGAPS model continues to lead the pack of other models, with the current path passing increasingly further off of the NJ coast with each successive model run. That said, the path is still close enough to cause some problems for the NJ shore and rain just making it into Philadelphia. The current closest approach to occur Sunday morning into afternoon.

Will continue to watch this. Stay tuned.

Tropical Storm or Hurricane for this Weekend? -Wed PM
This upcoming weekend's forecast will in part be influenced by the track of hurricane Irene. The latest NOGAPS and GFS models bring the storm very close to the NJ coast by late Saturday into Sunday. The NOGAPS, usually more accurate, is further east with the storm, enough so to limit it's impact for NJ and for the PHL area. With grounds so wet, any strong winds will be problematic for trees.

Still to soon to be sure about the track and timing. Stay tuned.

Philadelphia Weekend Weather Forecast -Thu PM
A difficult forecast for the upcoming weekend due to an unstable cyclonic upper flow which will result in periods of cloudiness and showers and thunderstorms. Since the triggers of this instability will be difficult to time, showers are possible any time, but most likely in the afternoon and early evening.

Sat 8/20: Intervals of sun and clouds with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. High 82.

Sun 8/21: Intervals of sun and clouds with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. High 85.
