Philadelphia Week Weather Outlook- Sunday
There has been an interesting pattern change developing. Last week, the GFS model had shown a rather uninteresting pattern for this week, with continued mild weather. Over recent days, the GFS has shown a significant pattern change as increasingly cold weather moving in for us both early in the week and especially by next weekend. In fact, only the recent model runs have shown temps to hit freezing for tonight. By next weekend, the weather map is looking incredibly winter-like.
For the period Thursday through Saturday and possibly Sunday, the GFS carves out an extremely amplified upper pattern, spawning deep coastal low pressure development for Thursday and suggesting that the upper low might close off for the weekend. Either way, it looks like we're headed for windy and wintery cold weather for the end of this week. We might even see some snow showers! Stay tuned.
Climate Forecast Discussion: Solar cycle 24 continues to ramp up. Total solar irradiance has increased. Add this increased thermal background to the greenhouse warming and I expect to see much milder temps this fall and winter. Additionally, the increased energy available for low pressure development will likely result in some additional monster storms. Rain or ice storms are more likely than snow for us.

Philadelphia Weekend Weather Forecast -Wed PM
The extremely deep low pressure system affecting the Midwest will shear off to the north and west, as it drags a cold front through late Thursday.
A similar scenario to last weekend, as a cold snap Friday into Saturday is expected to moderate quickly as the jet stream relaxes to our north on Sunday. Some unknowns for the weekend-- there's the possibility of upper air disturbances bringing some instability cloudiness for Saturday. Additionally, as warm air returns on Sunday, some mid level cloudiness is possible. Will have to wait until Friday for these upper air features to clarify.

Sun 10/31: Mostly sunny and a bit milder. Some clouds move in during the late afternoon. High 62.

Philadelphia Weekend Weather Update -Sat PM
A northeasterly surface flow in combination with an upper trough/developing closed low will bring unsettled conditions for Sunday afternoon through the beginning of the week. At the surface, an inverted coastal trough will bring moisture up along the coast Sunday afternoon and will combine with the closed upper level low.
Tonight's NAM model brings rain into Philadelphia about 2 PM Sunday. This afternoon's GFS still holds off the precip until evening. I'm leaning towards the NAM
Sun 10/3: Some sun very early, then cloudy. Showers likely mid to late afternoon. High 63.

Philadelphia Weekend Weather Update -Fri AM
The heavy rains are moving away this morning.
A fall-like feeling for the weekend, as cool high pressure builds in north, giving us a northeasterly flow. An upper air disturbance and upper trough will likely cause instability cloudiness to develop; it's unclear how much cloudiness we will have, but it's appearing right now that there may be considerable cloudiness for the weekend. But dry and cool conditions expected.
