Intel and Apple Silicon

Updated 11-23-24 Read this Important Note for users with conda or miniconda previously installed on their Macs.
Four different tutorials are available. All four tutorials rely on Homebrew for installation. Choose the tutorial based on the age of your Mac, the version of wgrib2 and the directory structure of your system, specifically the directory location of any previous Homebrew installation. (Intel, migrated from Intel, or new install Apple Silicon.).

These tutorials are designed for beginners. The tutorials are step-by-step.

Tutorial 1 – How to Install and Compile wgrib2 on MacOS Sequoia, Sonoma

Tutorial 2 – How to Install and Compile wgrib2 on MacOS (Ventura- Apple Silicon M1-M3)

• For Apple Silicon Macs only with new systems, not migrated from previous Intel. New “Clean” installs.
• Homebrew directory will be installed in /opt/homebrew
• wgrib2 version 3.1.3


Tutorial 3- How to Install and Compile wgrib2 on MacOS (Big Sur through Monterey, also Ventura on Intel or Apple Silicon migrated from Intel)

• For Intel Macs and Apple Silicon Macs with systems previously migrated from Intel using Migration Assistant or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper
• Homebrew already exists in directory /usr/local/homebrew
• wgrib2 versions 3.0.1 to 3.1.2 to 3.13. (Use the new v3.1.3)


Tutorial 4- How to Install and Compile wgrib2 on MacOS X and MacOS (El Capitan through Catalina & Mojave)

• Homebrew installed or will be installed in /usr/local/homebrew
• For older, Intel Macs only
• older versions of wgrib2 versions 2.7- 2.9
