vertical shear

« Back to Glossary Index

“Vertical shear”, also referred to as “vertical wind shear”, is the change in wind speed and direction with altitude. Strong changes, on the order of 35-40+ between 0 and 6000 m above ground allow strong thunderstorms to maintain their intensity over distance.

Minimal or low levels of vertical shear allows thunderstorms to collapse upon themselves, limiting their growth and areal coverage.
