High Resolution Rapid Refresh”— The HRRR model is run every hour, with a very high resolution of 2-3 kilometers. It takes about 1.3 hours to almost 2 hours (for the 48 hour forecast runs) for for each model to be computed and become available.

The forecasts of the HRRR extend out 18 hours, but the 00z, 06z, 12z and 18z model runs extend forecasts out to 48 hours.

The HRRR is one of several new “Convection Allowing Models”. (referred to as CAM models). It has specific physics for the parameterization of convection (thunderstorms).
