Rapid Refresh Forecast System
A new generation, high resolution unified forecast system, currently under final development for expected operational release early in 2026. The current RRFS uses a FV3 core, similar to the GFS model. Unfortunately, testing has revealed a tendency to over-predict convective precipitation; this has been attributed to the FV3 core geometry. Future versions will likely switch to another core, likely a variable grid called MPAS
