Theta (θ) / Potential Temperature Trigger
A “theta trigger” refers to areas where potential temperature (θ) surfaces are tightening or tilting, indicating increasing thermal gradients and atmospheric instability. In practice, forecasters often look at theta-e (equivalent potential temperature), which incorporates both temperature and moisture. When higher theta-e air is forced to rise over lower theta-e air (isentropic lift), it can act as a trigger for clouds and precipitation—even in the absence of strong surface fronts. These zones are especially useful for identifying elevated convection and overrunning precipitation setups.
